Closing Minnesota's 2004 Session

On December 22, 2003, Senator
Steve Kelley said, "Im not sure it's accurate, legally or hisorically to
call the Declaration of Independence a 'founding document'."
Can you imagine how our
founders might have reacted to such a statement?
To help your imagination we've
prepared a 7X10 high quality glossy photo of Senator Kelley sitting at the
table with John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and the rest of
our Founders as they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred
honor, so that we might have liberty. For a copy, send us a donation of
$10 or order

Progress Report
at the Capitol
May 11
- The two biggest education issues this session have yet to be resolved.
1. Commissioner Yecke's confirmation remains in limbo.
2. The Senate passed its illegitimate and radical social studies
standards last Tuesday. A House/Senate conference committee was
appointed and met today. (see
update)

Senate
DFL Committee Votes No to Commissioner Yecke
April 27
Those watching the confirmation
hearing yesterday witnessed a kangaroo court against the Commissioner.
Trumped up charges were brought forward simply to justify an unseemly
political power grab. (see
update) Take Action Now! ALL senators should hear from the
public. (see

Education Elite
Wrote Kelley's Standards April
5, 2004
The
mystery authors of
Senator Kelley's replacement standards that passed the Senate Education
Committee on March 26th have now been revealed.
In the interest of helping the public get to know the Kelley standards'
authors, EdWatch has created a
page on our website with cursory information about the authors, links
to some of their background work, and affiliations. While the information
on our site can't possibly be comprehensive in such a short time, we hope
that it will provide the public and legislators a glimpse of the radical
ideology behind the Kelley standards. (See
update)
Action:
The standards are expected to be adopted on the senate
floor sometime next week!
Please make every effort to
contact your Senator and all DFL Senators (see below) by telephone or
e-mail, or talk to him/her personally during the Easter break. Please tell
them:
-
Pass the Citizen Committee
Social Studies Standards.
Oppose the radical Kelley standards.
-
Support the amendment to the
science standards that would require teaching the full range of
scientific controversy about evolution.
-
Support the confirmation of
Commissioner Yecke.
Commissioner Yecke's confirmation hearings are still in committee, so it
will not come before the full senate for at least another week. However,
the senators need to hear from you on this now.
-
Finally, please contact
others you know to join in this effort to contact their senators. (see
list of Senators)

The Kelley
Social Studies Standards March 30
(See
update)
The Kelley social studies
standards were finally released on Friday, March 26th, well into the
committee hearing, and not long before the vote to adopt them.
Consequently, the Senate committee members had no opportunity to review
the standards they were expected to adopt or reject... Lisa Norling,
professor of Women's Studies at the University of Minnesota, and the only
professor to come forward, stated in her testimony, "It may appear that
they came out of nowhere." (See

House Gives Up Ground on
Social Studies Standards
In a disappointing
vote on the floor of the House Thursday, the Republican House leadership
defeated an effort to reverse the changes that had been made to the "3rd
draft" of the social studies standards. The Buesgens amendment would have
restored the parts of the
standards that had been undermined in the "behind closed door"
revisions last month. (See
