EdAction April 23, 2001 Minnesota Senate votes to keep the Profile
The Senate Education Omnibus Finance bill (SF 866) was being heard today on the floor of the Senate. Since the Senate Education Committee Chair, Senator Pappas, has consistently refused to hear the bill to repeal the Profile of Learning, Senator Bachmann offered the repeal bill as an amendment to the omnibus education finance bill. Her amendment was identical to the Kielkucki Profile repeal bill that has already passed the House Education Policy Committee and which will be included in the House version of the Omnibus Education Finance bill. Senator Bachmann gave an articulate, informed and passionate appeal to all Senators there to consider the well-being of the students of Minnesota. She distributed copies of various reports that have provided evidence of the failure of the Profile. Senator Limmer, Senator Olson, and Senator Rieter rose to thank Sen. Bachmann for her work and to defend the amendment. Senator Pappas led the Profile defense. With the exception of Senators Dean Johnson and Hottinger, most other Senators remained uncharacteristically silent. The roll call vote defeated the Bachmann amendment, 39 to 26. Please show up for the Protest/Rally at the Capitol on Sunday, April 29th at 2:30 p.m. to protest the refusal of the Minnesota Senate to hear, consider or respond to the public on the Profile of Learning! |
