EdAction October 3, 2001 Federal bill HR2666: SBA Creates CurriculumFor those who think School-to-Work is gone, you need to know it is on a roll. A new federal bill, coming up on the U.S. House of Representatives floor tomorrow, allocates $21 million to the Small Business Administration to give grants to Small Business Development Centers to design and implement curricula for secondary schools. The bill is called the "Vocational and Technical Entrepreneurship Development Act of 2001" (HR2666). The federal government is again funding federal agencies to develop and implement curricula in the local schools. The Centers will, of course report back to the Small Business Administration within 18 months and the SBA will oversee and evaluate the program. This is just $21 million more taxpayer money to transform our schools into job training and placement centers. Job skills and credentialing has replaced academics. Teachers tell us that academics are being gutted in the schools. They tell us that the schools are in full decline. Is small business entrepreneurship a good thing? Yes! But students are being forced into narrow job-training when they ought be learning broadbased knowledge that will keep them free. Instead, they are apprenticing at local businesses and watching children at daycare centers. Tell your U.S. Congressman to "Just say no to School-to-Work and HR2666!" Sponsor: Rep. Robert Brady |
