EdAction April 2, 2001 Governor needs to be StoppedLetter to the Editor As long as the Minnesota Senate is ruled by those who guarantee a virtual monopoly to government educators, they (educators) need not rail against Gov. Jesse Ventura's proposal to classify teachers as essential employees. The governor's continuous support of the Profile of Learning and School-to-Work (STW) is the true evil and needs the concerted effort of noble-minded teachers to stop its destructive objectives. The traditional liberal arts education, which has constituted the underpinning of freedom in America, is in danger of being sacked. Supplanting the knowledge-based requirements of yesteryear and today will be an emotion-based curricula of happy thoughts governed by moral and logical relativism. Compounding these near-fatal flaws will be the state's centralized planning with its endemic inability to respond to economic needs. Under the state plan, pre-teens will have their careers set by the state in collaboration with businesses that have been blackmailed by the state; together they will determine each dutiful citizen's life. Under STW, no one will have to worry if there is no market for their skills. The state has a solution in place in this ``cradle to grave'' education plan. Of course, this ends the silly notion of retirement and keeps state officials busy with centralized regulating and planning. Minnesota teachers who are informed of the STW program will mobilize and cut the tentacles of their monster before it enslaves all. Nancy Arata |
