EdAction February 3, 2000 Update from the Capitol The landscape has changed in a number of ways, to some degree the result of the incredible presence at the State Capitol yesterday. We estimate about 1,000, including the students and children. What a terrific day! Speaker of the House Sviggum announced to a group gathered in the rotunda yesterday that he and others were committed to driving HR 2720 (Basic Skills Writing Test destruction) through committee and back to the floor of the House on a fast track for a vote. Wow! How showing up in force makes a difference! Today, the news reported that the Chairman of the House Education Committee, Rep. Harry Mares, notified Commissioner Jax that she should immediately bring all action on the scoring of the writing test to a halt until the legislature has had a chance to act. Moving on, many have requested the following information. Joe Souceray stated this afternoon: "I am a cynical guy, but I just don't believe that the state has personal data files on students." Well, the state now has in law provisions for a personal data file on each student. |
